VHF DSC Radio Course
A VHF radio is an essential item of safety equipment and should be fitted or carried on all boats. If you are using a VHF marine radio it is mandatory to be licensed to use it. Taking a VHF radio course to ensure that you know how to use it is very beneficial and will allow you to pass the required exam to gain your Radio Operator's Certificate.
Following changes in the law from January 2014 there are now several ways of gaining the knowledge required to pass your exam:
1. Through the traditional route of taking a one day VHF radio course which will cover the rules and regulations, channels to use, do's and don'ts, Mayday calls etc. When you enrol we will send you a course pack which includes your VHF handbook and advice regarding pre-course reading from the handbook. When you attend the classroom session you should be well prepared for it. By the end of the day you will be ready to take the assessment and join the hundreds of succesful candidates who have passed through Torbay Sea School having gained their licence. About 50% of the course consists of practical experience using 4 interconnected radios. We don't use computer simulators at Torbay Sea School but prefer to allow you to gain confidence and competence using the "real thing"; we use ICOM IC-M421, IC-M505 and IC-M601 radios which have been specially adapted to prevent transmissions outside our classroom.
2. Enrol with us for the RYA Interactive course; contact us for your unique login code and we will send you your course pack which accompanies the online course. The course and course pack costs £60 and is designed to allow you to learn at your own pace - as long as you are reasonably computer literate and have an internet connection you can complete this course in the comfort of your own home or workplace using a PC, Mac or iPad/Tablet. Following the course you can book to take the assessment in the same way as below.
3. You can opt to simply take the exam in which case you can buy a compulsory course pack from us and book your exam. We have assessors who are employed by the school and so within reason you can take the exam at almost anytime. The cost of the exam alone is £60
