Preparation for DoT/MCA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster exam
A different course to the RYA Coastal Skipper certificate of competence although sometimes undertaken in conjunction with it; this is designed to prepare you for the Coastal Skipper examination required to gain the DoT certificate required for working on certain commercial vessels or the Yachtmaster qualification whether for commercial or leisure use.
You should have extensive knowledge of collision regulations, lights and shapes and have navigation knowledge to the standard of shorebased Coastal Skipper prior to undertaking this course since there is no time to teach these subjects during the preparation. There are different pre-requisites for each qualification which are listed on our examination guidance page.
We will spend four days of the five day course working in the local area to familiarise you with the tidal streams and buoyage systems etc., there will be no time to carry out passages of any great distance so you should have completed these (if required) before commencing the course.
Extensive time will be spent in yacht manoeuvring, man overboard recovery drills, berthing, pilotage and emergency drills including night pilotage. We will do our utmost to prepare you for the independently examined assessment which will normally commence in the late afternoon of Day 4. The exam may well extend into the next day following a few hours overnight rest dependant on the number of candidates taking the exam and the examiner will give you his decision on your performance before he departs.
