Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Shorebased Course

RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Shorebased courses are run both intensively over 5 days and over Winter evenings in a night school format. We run the intensive Day Skipper courses at least once a month and generally every two weeks through the Spring and Summer months.

The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased course is advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course.

This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

Course topics include:

position fixing
course shaping and plotting
tidal knowledge
use of almanacs and admiralty publications
electronic position finding equipment
taking and interpreting forecasts
plotting weather systems
weather predictions using a barometer and by observation
collision regulations
customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad

Our start days are favourable for your work patterns since we usually start them on a Thursday and conclude on a Monday to allow you to use the weekend and avaoid taking too many holiday days from your workplace.

Night school Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased courses are designed for you to complete the course during those dark evenings when boating isn't top of your priorities. We space the course over 22 weeks for 2 hours on each Wednesday evening, but have a lengthy Christmas break and conclude the course shortly before Easter. Ideal for the new boating season.
