RYA Day Skipper

This course is intended for the competent boater who has gained the RYA Helmsman certificate or has relevant experience. Ideally you will have completed the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course or be a competent navigator, have spent at least 5 days living aboard a motor cruiser and covered at least 100 miles. Successful candidates will be deemed qualified to Skipper a motor cruiser safely by day in tidal waters with which they are familiar. Each candidate is kept informed of their progress as they learn about the boat, its handling and the routines required to run it smoothly.
The course is run over 4 days with accommodation ashore for the duration. This can be arranged for you if required but is not included in the course fee; we have an arrangement with a local hotel with economical rates from £20 B&B if required. We normally have a student to instructor ratio of 4:1. You can expect to visit the historic and beautiful harbours of Devon such as Dartmouth, Salcombe, Torquay, Brixham and the River Yealm.

As a Day Skipper candidate you are given guidance by our experienced RYA instructor whilst you build on prior experience. The instructor assesses strengths and weaknesses and will mentor each candidate as he/she takes control of the crew and the boat during navigational passages, coming alongside and handling the boat. You will also learn basic engine maintenance, how to plan a passage, make weather predictions, victual a boat and how to take action as a skipper in emergency situations such as man-overboard. There will also be a night passage where you will gain experience of navigating, passage-making and pilotage by night.

Cost from £750 per person
